The Grúagach’s Lair

Wild Wisdom from a Grúagach’s Lair - Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Waterford, Ireland 2026

Wild Wisdom from a Grúagach’s Lair is an immersive installation combining stained glass, sculpture, moving image, performance and found materials. Centred on the Grúagach, a shape-shifting hairy woman from Irish folklore, the project reclaims domestic space as a site of feminist resistance and imaginative transformation.

The work embraces maximalist aesthetics, hybrid objects, glowing stained glass and ritualised performances to challenge patriarchal ideals of order and restraint. It proposes an aesthetic of abundance, enchantment and unruly kinship where ornament and clutter are reimagined as forms of survival and resistance.

Rooted in ecofeminist and posthuman theory, the project explores how hybrid beings, colour and animist logic can open alternative ways of dwelling in the world. Conceived as an ongoing body of work, Wild Wisdom from a Grúagach’s Lair will culminate in a major moving image installation at GOMA, Waterford, in October 2026.
